๐Ÿฌ The Jelly Bean Mind-Read

Easy Interactive Ages 7+ Calculator only 3 minutes
Every school fair has a jar of jelly beans. Everybody guesses. But you're not going to guess how many beans are in the jar โ€” you're going to guess THEIR guess. And you'll be right every time.

Trick 1

The Coin Vanish (The French Drop)

Easy Plays BIG Ages 7+ 1 coin 10 minutes
Show a coin. Close your hand. Open it. The coin is GONE. This is the first vanish every magician learns โ€” and it's 200 years old.

๐Ÿช„ The 5 Beats

๐Ÿช™
1

Hold the Coin

Pinch a quarter between your RIGHT thumb and fingertips, coin facing the audience. Show it off. Say "I've got a shiny coin. Watch close."

๐Ÿคฒ
2

Reach With Your Left

Bring your LEFT hand up and move it toward the coin like you're about to grab it. Your thumb goes UNDER, your fingers go OVER the coin.

๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ
3

The Secret Drop

As your left hand closes, secretly let the coin fall into your RIGHT palm โ€” caught by the base of your right thumb. Keep your right fingers relaxed and curled. Your left hand closes around NOTHING.

๐ŸŽฌ
4

Look at the Wrong Hand

Both your eyes go to your left fist like the coin is RIGHT THERE. Your audience's eyes follow yours. Meanwhile your right hand drops lazily to your side. Nobody looks at it.

โœจ
5

The Magic Word

Say "Ta-TWISTY-Da!" and slowly open your left hand. Empty! Show both sides. Audience gasps. Later, when nobody's watching, you can pull the coin out of an ear, out of a pocket, or just let it quietly drop into your pocket.

Why it works

Magicians call this misdirection. The audience looks where YOU look. When you stare at your left fist, every eye in the room does the same โ€” even though the coin is actually in your right hand. Misdirection is more powerful than any secret gimmick.

Trick 2

The 1089 Mystery

Easy Self-working Ages 8+ Paper & pencil 5 minutes
Your friend picks a secret number. They do some math. You "predict" the answer โ€” and you're right EVERY time. Secret: the math does the trick for you.

๐Ÿช„ The 6 Beats

๐Ÿ“œ
1

Write the Prediction

On a slip of paper write 1089 in big numbers. Fold it. Hand it to someone. Tell them "Don't open it yet."

๐ŸŽฒ
2

Pick a 3-Digit Number

Ask your friend to write any 3-digit number where the FIRST and LAST digits are at least 2 apart. Example: 842 (8 and 2 are 6 apart โ€” works).

๐Ÿ”„
3

Reverse It

Have them reverse the digits. 842 becomes 248. Write that underneath.

โž–
4

Subtract

Subtract the smaller number from the bigger one. 842 โˆ’ 248 = 594. Write the answer.

๐Ÿ”
5

Reverse Again & Add

Reverse that answer (594 โ†’ 495) and ADD it to itself. 594 + 495 = 1089.

โœจ
6

The Reveal

Tell them "Now open my prediction." They unfold the paper. It says 1089. Their jaw drops. Every time. It always works.

Why it works

This is real math, not a trick. Because of how place value works, any 3-digit number with that gap always reduces to the same answer: 1089. The math forces it. You're not a mind reader โ€” you're a math wizard. This is what magicians call a self-working trick.

Trick 3

The Ambitious Card

Medium Classic Ages 9+ Deck of cards 15 minutes
A chosen card is shoved into the MIDDLE of the deck. You tap the deck. The card rises to the TOP. Every magician who ever lived has a version of this trick.

๐Ÿช„ The 6 Beats

๐ŸŽด
1

Spread and Pick

Spread the cards across your hand. Ask a friend to "pick any card, look at it, remember it" โ€” then hand it back to you.

๐Ÿ‘†
2

Double-Lift Set-Up

Place their card on TOP of the deck. Then secretly pick up the TOP TWO cards as one (your pointer finger pushes them together at the short edge). Beginners: practice 100 times in a mirror before you show anyone.

๐Ÿ‘€
3

Show the "Wrong" Card

Flip the double over face-up. Your friend sees a different card. They go "That's NOT my card!" Act surprised. Flip the double face-down back onto the deck.

๐Ÿ”ฝ
4

"Push" It Into the Middle

Take the TOP card (which is actually their real card) and push it into the middle of the deck. Everyone watching thinks it's the wrong card going in. It's actually their card.

๐Ÿซณ
5

Tap and Rise

Square up the deck. Tap it three times. Say "Ta-TWISTY-Da." Turn over the TOP card โ€” it's their real card again.

๐Ÿ”
6

Do It Again (Louder)

This is the secret to ALL ambitious card routines: you do it 3 or 4 times. Each time harder. Each time louder. By the fourth time the audience is gasping and clapping.

Why it works

The double-lift โ€” picking up two cards as one โ€” is one of the most important moves in all of card magic. Dai Vernon used it. David Copperfield uses it. Shin Lim uses it. Practice it in a mirror 100 times before you try this on a real person. If the move is smooth, the trick is invisible.

Trick 4

Pencil Through Paper

Easy Impromptu Ages 6+ Paper + pencil 5 minutes
Poke a pencil right through a piece of paper โ€” rip, hole, everything. Then shake the paper. It's PERFECT again. No hole. No tear. How?

๐Ÿช„ The 5 Beats

๐Ÿ“„
1

Fold the Paper

Take a regular sheet of paper and fold it IN HALF away from the audience, making a V-shape pocket facing you.

โœ๏ธ
2

Poke the Pencil

Hold the paper up. Put the pencil behind the paper, pointing tip-first toward yourself. It LOOKS like the pencil is poking through.

๐Ÿ‘€
3

The Rip Sound

With your other hand, quickly tear a piece of scrap paper you had in your pocket, or make a "rrrriiip!" noise with your mouth. The audience hears a tear. They see a pencil sticking "through."

๐Ÿ”„
4

Tip the Paper

Tilt the top of the paper toward the audience. The pencil is now clearly behind. Slide it out.

โœจ
5

The Reveal

Unfold the paper and show both sides. NO HOLE. Say "I fixed it." Hand the paper out for the audience to inspect. They check it 10 ways. Perfect every time.

Why it works

This is an optical illusion: from the front, a pencil behind a folded paper with the V pointing toward you looks exactly like a pencil pushed through. The fake rip sound convinces ears. The audience's brains fill in the hole that isn't there.

Trick 6

The Age Mystery

Easy Math magic Ages 8+ Just talking 2 minutes
Ask someone to do some math with their age. You instantly know their birth year AND their age โ€” no matter who it is. Works on parents, teachers, librarians. Never fails.

๐Ÿช„ The 5 Beats

๐ŸŽ‚
1

Think of Your Age

Ask your friend: "Think of your age. Don't tell me yet."

โœ–๏ธ
2

Multiply by 2

"Now double it. Multiply it by 2 in your head."

โž•
3

Add 5

"Now add 5 to that number."

โœ–๏ธ
4

Multiply by 50

"Now multiply that by 50. (If it's a big number, use a calculator.)"

๐Ÿ”ฎ
5

Ask for the Answer

"Add their last 2 birth year digits if they've had a birthday this year โ€” no wait, just tell me your final number." When they tell you, subtract 250 in your head. The answer is a 3 or 4 digit number. The FIRST digit(s) are their age. Amazing.

Why it works

The math does all the work. Double + 5 ร— 50 = 100 ร— age + 250. When you subtract 250, you're left with 100 ร— age, which is just "their age" with two zeros after it. Or, if they added their birth year, the year goes in the last digits. You look like a mind reader. You're just fast at math.

Try it on yourself first with a calculator so you can see how it works. Once you understand the pattern, you can do it in your head and it looks like mind-reading.
